40 Years With Islamic Relief

Remembering a Legacy of Compassion and Change

For four decades, Islamic Relief has been weaving a thread of hope, compassion, and positive change across 40 countries. With your support, we've touched the lives of 120 million people, creating a world where no one is left behind. Join us in honoring our 40th anniversary and continue the journey of transforming lives. Thank you for being part of our story.

This fundraiser is being organized by
UW OSP, the University of Waterloo Orphan Sponsorship Program

The Bosnia war, which began in 1992 and ended in 1995, left 4.2 million Bosnians internally and externally displaced, infrastructure destroyed, and resulted in a collapse of the economy. Ever since, the country has made significant progress in reconstructing infrastructure, state-building, and social integration.

However, high unemployment rates and gender inequality continue to negatively impact peoples’ ability to access nutritious food, education and healthcare. The low employment rates have resulted in many of the youth and widow populations to leave the country in search of secure livelihoods elsewhere.

How is Islamic Relief helping?

Islamic Relief started its work in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1992, where they delivered food, water, and clothes to vulnerable populations. Now, after the war, Islamic Relief continues to support the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina, some of their programs include rebuilding homes, providing food packages, and providing cold weather kits.

More details on Islamic Relief's Work in Bosnia and Herzegovina can be found here: https://www.islamicreliefcanada.org/about/locations/bosnia-herzegovina

Why do the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina need your support?

57.22% of the total number of unemployed people are women, including single mothers (Labour and Employment Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, 2020)

75,000 refugees, asylum-seekers and migrants pass through Bosnia and Herzegovina to reach western Europe (UNHCR, 2021)

18.56% or 640,000 people live in poverty (UNICEF, 2018)

The Prophet PBUH said: “The believer’s shade on the Day of Resurrection will be his charity.” (Al-Tirmidhi)

Lastly, be sure to share this fundraiser with your friends and family as it gives them the opportunity to contribute in making a change in someone’s life. For every donation they make, the blessings of the reward will come back to you for sharing the cause.

All donations to Islamic Relief are tax deductible. Islamic Relief emails out a consolidated tax receipt at the beginning of the following year for all your donations at once.

The funds raised will go towards Islamic Relief’s projects in Bosnia. This project in Bosnia will empower vulnerable individuals and communities and engage with orphan children. Besides the funds going towards the Inspire psychosocial programming for orphans, they will also go towards long term projects in the region. They will be contributed towards livelihood support and psychosocial support. Agriculture and animal rearing resources will be provided to increase income-generating opportunities. Families will be provided with greenhouses, livestock, and specialized training.

Islamic Relief has been working in Bosnia since 1993 and has implemented projects that address healthcare, food insecurity, education, livelihoods, and orphan care. After the war, we established an office in Sarajevo and served communities to rebuild homes and schools and provide Ramadan and Qurbani food packages.

Through our humanitarian and development projects, we implement food security, livelihood, non-food items, education, and psycho-social support.

We prioritize the needs of orphans and vulnerable children. In 2005, we launched our orphans’ sponsorship program to provide assistance to child-headed households, girl children and homes with infants and younger children.

We provide support to the household by offering skills training and development to guardians so that they can become self-sufficient.

Islamic Relief works with communities to strengthen their resilience to calamities, and we provide vital emergency aid when disasters occur.

We help the impoverished access basic services, including education, water and sanitation, as well as healthcare. We provide lasting routes out of poverty through our sustainable development schemes. Our integrated approach to progress is transforming communities worldwide.

We tackle the root causes of poverty and make sure that the world’s most vulnerable people have real influence in both our programs and advocacy.

Our key values, of compassion, justice, custodianship, sincerity and excellence – a critical part of our Islamic faith - inspire us each and every day to create positive change and remember the sanctity of life.

In line with Islamic teachings on the value of every human life, we provide assistance to whoever needs it most, regardless of race, religion or gender. We work to transform and save lives of people in crisis both Canada and across the world.

Let us share the khair from the blessings Allah has bestowed upon us.
