About Antigonish Ummah Masjid and Community Centre

The journey of building our mosque starts in 1996. In 1996 the Maritime Muslim Academy (MMA) with the help of the executive of the Islamic Association was able to reach a deal with the city that allowed MMA to use one of the Dalhousie Student Union buildings (Building C) as “lease to buy” without specific details or time frame, and it continued to be used for Friday congregation to allow students and those who work in the Halifax area to perform their Friday prayers easier. In 1999 money donated from the family of a deceased Saudi prince allowed the MMA to buy 2 school buildings known as building “B” and building “C”. In 2000 MMA board of directors appointed a “Building Committee”, which was composed of representative members of the diverse Muslim community in this region with a mandate to help MMA decide on the best uses of the two newly purchased properties. In 2005, HRM consent and concluded that our buildings (B & C) are not heritage, which removed a major obstacle that was in the way of proceeding towards a new Masjid. In 2007 initial building construction permit was obtained and the old building structure was demolished. In 2011 the prayer hall was substantially completed and opened for use by the community with a partial occupancy permit for the first day of Ramadan.

We aim to make Ummah Mosque an active institution that resembles the Prophet Muhammad’s Mosque where it was more than a place to pray. It was a place to learn Islam, a place to pay zakat to the needy, a place to get together for weddings and parties, a place for children to play and have fun, and most importantly, a place in which the wisdom of living Islam materializes. In essence, the aim is to render the Mosque a hub around which the Muslims’ life revolves.

Our goals are:

1. Build strong Organizational Capacity

2. Achieve Complete Financial Stability

3. Establish & Provide Quality Programs & Services

As Muslims, we know that our mosques are not only places of worship but also centers of community life. They have been there for us in times of joy and times of hardship, providing us with a safe space to come together and support one another. However, due to the long-lasting effects of COVID-19 many mosques continue to struggle to keep their doors open and their services.

This is where we, as a community, can make a difference. By giving Sadaqah and donations to support our mosques, we can ensure that they continue to be a source of strength and unity for us. Even a small donation can go a long way in helping to pay for the upkeep of the mosque and the programs and services it offers.

Giving back to our community is a way of fulfilling our religious obligations and showing gratitude for the blessings that Allah has bestowed upon us. It is also a way of investing in our community's future and ensuring that future generations have access to the same support and resources that we have had. So that like us, our children may also find the solace we have found within the walls of our masajid.

So let us come together and support our mosques and each other. Every contribution counts. Let us remember the vital role that our masajid have played in our lives and make a commitment to help ensure that they continue to thrive.

Donate your Sadaqah Jariyah to support your local Masjid in'sha Allah.
