What the Earth Remembers: Help Sudan

My painting "What the Earth Remembers" tells the story of a parent and child walking across cracked land toward water. Only one keeps going, and neither reaches the well. In Sudan, that's real: millions of families have been forced from their homes, and famine has taken hold in parts of the country. The painting raised $950 for Sudan at the Quebec Charity Week auction. Let's take it further. Every donation helps get food, clean water and medicine to families who are still walking.

The Story Behind the Painting

A parent and a child walk across dry, cracked land, looking for water. They start the journey side by side. Somewhere along the way, the parent's footprints start to fade, and then they stop. The child keeps going alone, turns back once as if waiting for someone who isn't coming, and keeps walking toward the well. But the footprints fade out before they get there, and the water stays just out of reach.

That's the story of my painting, What the Earth Remembers. Above the footprints is an ayah from Surah Al-Anbiya: "We made from water every living thing" (21:30). Allah made water the source of all life, and yet for so many families in Sudan right now, it's right there and still too far.

When people are forced to leave their homes and don't make it, sometimes all that's left of them is their footprints. The earth remembers them, even when the world looks away.

For families in Sudan, this isn't just a story. War has forced around 14 million people from their homes, about half of them children. More than 21 million people don't have enough to eat, and famine has been confirmed in parts of Darfur and Kordofan, where families have been surviving on leaves and animal feed.

The painting sold for $950 at our Charity Week auction, and every dollar went to families in Sudan. This page is where it continues. Your donation helps get food, clean water and medicine to families who are still walking.

Those footprints don't have to end the way they do in the painting. Thank you for being part of a different ending.
