Heavy monsoon rains over 72 hours in southeastern Bangladesh and upstream in Tripura, India, sent large volumes of water down the transboundary Gomti River and caused widespread flooding. More than 33,000 homes were destroyed, leaving many people stranded and unsure where to go. In a country already facing deep poverty and a major humanitarian crisis, there were serious concerns that the worst impacts fell on the most vulnerable households.
