* Deadly floods displace and impact millions in Bangladesh  *
The flood crisis in Bangladesh has reached alarming levels as of August 2024, causing severe impacts across multiple districts in the country.

Approximately 3 million people have been impacted, with countless stranded and seeking shelter.

The situation is expected to worsen, with forecasts predicting heavy rainfall over the next few days and river levels already reaching dangerous heights. In a country rife with poverty and a severe humanitarian crisis, there is mounting fear that the floods will disproportionately affect extremely poor households.

Islamic Relief is on the ground and mobilizing an immediate response to provide essential humanitarian assistance to families affected by the floods.

Heavy monsoon rains over the past 72 hours in the southeastern districts of Bangladesh and upstream in Tripura, India, have sent a large volume of floodwaters downstream through the transboundary Gomti River.

This has caused severe flooding in eight districts of Bangladesh, including Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Feni, Chittagong, Noakhali, Comilla, and Khagrachari.

Approximately 33,000+ houses have been destroyed, leaving thousands stranded in floodwaters and unsure where to go.

The sudden rush of rainwater surprised residents, leaving them little to no time to evacuate with their belongings. Floodwaters have eroded major roads, damaged bridges, disrupted communications networks, and submerged entire crop fields and highways.

The full extent of the damage caused by the floods remains unknown, however, the number of residents impacted by the floods is expected to only increase in the coming days as rescue operations are underway.

Over the next few days, Islamic Relief will distribute initial aid such as cash grants and hygiene kits to approximately 6,700 people in the highly impacted districts of Feni and Comilla, with a focus on the most vulnerable, including children and people with disabilities.

Bangladesh is home to a population of over 171 million citizens and is one of the world’s most densely populated countries. 31.5% of its population lives below the poverty line, making it one of the poorest nations in the world.

Bangladesh faces a severe humanitarian crisis, with inadequate access to essentials such as shelter, clean water, sanitation, and basic services.

When floods strike, vulnerable children, women, men, and elders are cut off from life-saving medicine, vital communication, and transport. Without adequate sanitation and shelter, many are even more vulnerable to the spread of disease as well.
