Seeing Hope: Restoring Sight in Gaza

Islamic Relief Canada, in partnership with the Canada Palestine Cultural Association (CPCA) and Run for Palestine Edmonton, is coming together to support life-changing cataract and specialized eye surgeries for vulnerable patients in Northern Gaza, where just $1,200 CAD can help fund one cataract surgery and bring the gift of sight to someone in need. The aim is to fundraise for at least 500 individuals to get the surgeries.

Imagine slowly losing your ability to see while knowing that a treatable condition stands between you and your sight.

Now imagine facing that reality in Gaza, where prolonged conflict, displacement, shortages of essential medical supplies, and limited access to specialized healthcare have made even routine treatment increasingly difficult to obtain.

For many vulnerable Palestinians, cataracts and other serious eye conditions are not simply medical concerns. Without timely treatment, they can lead to preventable blindness — affecting a person's independence, livelihood, education, and ability to care for their family.

Through this project at the Specialized Eye Hospital in Northern Gaza, patients are receiving critical ophthalmic care based on medical need and urgency. The hospital provides essential outpatient, inpatient, diagnostic, and surgical services for conditions including cataracts, retinal and corneal diseases, glaucoma, pediatric eye conditions, and trauma-related injuries.

The Impact So Far

Through Phase 1 of the project, 9,782 people received support, with 13,478 consultations and more than 122,562 clinical services provided. A total of 1,136 ophthalmic surgeries were performed across multiple specialties, including 359 cataract surgeries.

For someone living with a cataract, a surgery costing approximately $1,200 CAD can be life-changing — helping restore their ability to see, move independently, work, care for their family, and participate in everyday life.

The Need Continues

Phase 2 of the project is already underway. In its first two months alone, approximately 519 ophthalmic surgeries were performed, including cataract, retinal, glaucoma, corneal, pediatric, and oculoplastic procedures.

The demand remains immense.
Patients are prioritized based on medical need and urgency, with a focus on vulnerable conflict-affected populations, including low-income families, elderly individuals at risk of preventable blindness, people suffering from trauma-related eye injuries, and children and adults requiring specialized care.

Together, we can help give vulnerable families in Gaza something incredibly precious: the ability to see their loved ones and their world more clearly again.

Your donation can help provide essential eye surgery to someone who may otherwise have no way to afford it. $1,200 CAD can help fund one cataract surgery.

Give today. Help restore sight. Help restore hope.
