Change Their Tomorrow

In 2022, I had the blessing of joining Inspire in Cape Town, South Africa. Spending time with orphans and their families was a deeply humbling experience. It made me realize just how privileged I truly am, and how even a small portion of what I have can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

I remember being struck by how incredibly thankful they were for what we had done, while I wondered whether anything I had contributed was even worthy of such gratitude.

One of the children I spent time with gave me the letter below, which I still keep close to me whenever I find myself asking, “What’s the point?” In his letter, he wrote: “There is not much kind and caring people in the world but I am glad and thankful there is just a few. I also want to do one day for other kids what you do for me.” This bright, beautiful young boy was not only thinking about what he can do for himself with the little he was given but also about how he could pay forward. If we all thought this way, the world would be a different place.

This year, I hope to repeat this experience with Islamic Relief in Indonesia. Not only to continue doing my small part in giving back, but also, in many ways, to soften my own heart through the privilege of being around these children and their families.

Who Are We?

The Inspire volunteer abroad program at Islamic Relief Canada is a unique opportunity that provides hands-on education to volunteers on the field and at home. Over the past 7 years, we have taken 40 cohorts to 9 different countries to learn from our teams and right-holders on the ground. This program focuses on having volunteers raise donations and awareness while allowing them to serve their communities locally and globally.
Through this experience, Islamic Relief Canada volunteers will engage directly with orphan children in Indonesia in order to better understand their circumstances and raise awareness.

What is this for?

This fundraising effort supports Islamic Relief Canada’s community development projects in Indonesia, as well as Islamic Relief's global emergency initiatives wherever the need is greatest. Your contributions will directly empower vulnerable communities, particularly children and youth, through educational programs, psychosocial support activities, community service projects such as school and home rehabilitation, and the distribution of food and hygiene kits. These initiatives address socio-economic challenges, build resilience, and promote long-term self-reliance. Your support will make a lasting impact on the lives of those in need, where it is needed most.
Your donation helps our rightsholders in various way; $1080 is used to sponsor an orphan for a year, whilst the rest of the money is used towards deliverables in the country. Additional money may be used in other high-need areas in other countries.

What will I be doing?

Over the duration of the field study, we will focus on providing orphans with psychosocial support and educational activities in addition to the distribution of food, clothes, and hygiene items and conduct other community service activities.

Inspire Program

The Inspire Volunteer Abroad Programs are a unique way to contribute to some of Islamic Relief Canada’s international projects. Prior to volunteering abroad, selected volunteers to raise funds that go directly to the project they will be assisting with.
While on the field study, volunteers will be part of a collaborative program where they will take part in several activities, including peer-to-peer learning opportunities, food, hygiene, and livelihood distributions, beneficiary home visits, and building refurbishment.
This experience allows volunteers to see an existing Islamic Relief Canada project, contribute to the project through their fundraising efforts, and positively interact with beneficiaries and project staff.
