Assalamu alaikum, and hi everyone. My name is Tahreem, and I’m the president of Islamic Relief at UTM.
This week, we’re joining something much bigger than our campus. Charity Week is Islamic Relief’s annual campaign where students and volunteers around the world spend one week in October raising money for orphans and children in need. It all started in 2003 with a group of students in London, and today it’s run entirely by volunteers like us. Every dollar we raise goes to programs in healthcare, education, emergency relief, orphan sponsorship, and clean water and sanitation
That’s what Raise for Relief is about. For one week, UTM shows what students can do when we show up for each other and for kids who need it most. Recent Charity Week projects have included medical evacuations for critically ill and injured children in Gaza, emergency aid and education in Sudan, and support for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. These are children who didn’t choose their circumstances, and a few dollars from a student here can mean a meal, a classroom, or a doctor’s visit there.You don’t have to be Muslim, and you don’t have to be part of our club. You just have to care. Charity Week has always been about unity, and that’s what we want UTM to feel this week.
