Gibraltar Leadership Academy

GLA Grizzlies United for Yemen

Yemen, once a thriving center of trade and culture, has been devastated by civil war since 2014. Ongoing conflict between groups like the Houthis, PLC, and STC has left the country divided, with over 370,000 deaths and 22 million people in need of aid. Despite this, humanitarian support remains critically underfunded, worsening the crisis. Through our campaign at Gibraltar Leadership Academy, we aim to unite our community to support Yemen by fundraising with Islamic Relief, a trusted organization providing life-saving aid in the region. Together, even small actions can create meaningful change.

The Crisis in Yemen

Yemen is a beautiful country that was once the hub of a thriving and wealthy ancient civilization, serving as a vital center for global trade and specialized commodities for thousands of years. It was well known for its spices, fragrances, and its famous Yemeni coffee. It would seem that Yemen was heading towards a bright future, full of prosperity and well-being; however, as one wave led to another, a strong, powerful tide wiped out what Yemen once could have been.
On September 21, 2014, civil war broke out in Sana’a, the capital of Yemen. The nation has been crippled with internal power struggles, with some key players being the Houthis, the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC), and the Southern Transitional Council (STC). This power struggle has left the country split in three, with violence, hunger and disease resulting in the deaths of over 370,000 civilians.
In a day and age where a world of knowledge is at humanity’s fingertips, the struggles of our Yemeni brothers and sisters are silent and constant. The lack of humanitarian aid efforts towards Yemen is so dire that a recent UN statistic proved that in early 2026, the aid entering Yemen is barely sufficient; only 28% is funded, leaving a nearly 2 billion dollar gap. This shortfall, one of the lowest in a decade, is forcing cuts to aid for millions, resulting in a worsening situation, as 22 million people need assistance.
Yemen needs our help. So will you be the impactful wave within a sea of ignorance? Will you allow your small actions to carry might?
Will you be the change we need?

Our GLA Community

At Gibraltar Leadership Academy, we pride our sense of school community, as we always step up to be the meaningful change we want to see. Each student, teacher, staff member, and parent is a drop, and together we make meaningful waves that make a difference. Through this campaign, we hope to unify our school community in making their small actions carry weight. We want to include each and every person to make everyone know that they have made an impact.
Our campaign is targeted solely towards our GLA community. For students, we will organize inclusive and appealing events so that they can know that they made a difference while having fun! For parents, we will reach out to them and provide regular updates on our campaign while requesting donations from them as well. We will give out incentives and have a bit of friendly competition between classes to see who can gather the most funds.
We will fundraise to the best of our abilities, and through our actions, we hope to create ripples that will result in meaningful waves that carry impact, with the permission of Allah.
No one deserves to suffer in silence, so what are you going to do about it?

Why we're working with Islamic Relief

Why did we choose to work with Islamic Relief? Because Islamic Relief is one of the most reputable organizations worldwide, with minimal admin fees, transparency in their funds, and has been serving Yemen for nearly 30 years as of 2026. Below is a message from Islamic Relief that states the humanitarian aid that they have done in Yemen and showcases the powerful impact they have made.
“Since 1998, we have been providing humanitarian relief in Yemen as the communities we serve have struggled through armed conflict, displacement, risk of famine, disease outbreaks and severe economic decline. Wherever possible we work through local partners as part of our efforts to strengthen civil society, concentrating on inclusion of all ages and abilities. Our Yemen team are among the first to respond to emergencies with life-saving aid.
Islamic Relief operates from its country office in Sana’a, Yemen. With a team of more than 3,000 staff and volunteers, supporting operations in over 70 percent of the country – 17 out of Yemen’s 22 governorates – we serve communities across the whole country, including in hard-to-reach areas. We have eight field offices in Dhamar, Amran, Aden, Taiz, Hodeida, Sana’a, Marib, and Raymah.”

Our Campaign

Our fundraising campaign plan involves several events and activities that we have carefully planned to be enjoyable and beneficial for our school community while being efficiently profitable. Our fundraising is targeted towards members of the GLA community, including parents, students, and staff. These events not only unify our school community but also directly contribute to life‑saving humanitarian aid for families in Yemen.
We made sure to include each grade (from kindergarten up to grade 12) in at least one event so that all students get a chance to contribute and participate in our campaign. Each event that we have planned is meant to create fun experiences for our students and school community that can help us reach our fundraising goals.
We will advertise our events through posters, flyers, in-school announcements and our instagram account (@grizzlies.united4yemen)
We will also collect cash donations, along with encouraging our school community members to donate on our fundraising page with Islamic Relief.
