The Inspire Volunteer Abroad Program

Empowering Orphans for a Brighter Future

Around the world, there are 140 million orphans, with 4.5 million in Indonesia alone. Every day, due to conflict, natural disasters, and other causes, approximately 5,700 new orphans are added to this staggering number. While Indonesia’s constitution promises protection and support for orphans, the state’s capacity is struggling to meet these demands. As a result, many orphans fall outside the scope of government programs, leaving them without adequate care and resources.

Islamic Relief Indonesia is currently supporting 2,000 orphans, ensuring they receive their basic needs, but we also have 500 orphans on a waiting list, some for almost a year. In response to this gap, we are launching a new initiative, SOFTS (Supporting Orphan Families to Strive), aimed at increasing the resilience of orphan families and helping them live with dignity while awaiting sponsorship.

The SOFTS program is designed to empower the guardians and mothers of orphans by providing them with the tools and training they need to support their families through sustainable livelihoods. By offering livelihood support to 50 orphan guardians and mothers, the program aims to generate stable income for families as they navigate life’s challenges.

The core activities of the SOFTS program include:

  1. Selection of mothers and/or guardians capable of running a livelihood initiative.
  2. Assessment of the specific livelihood opportunities available to them.
  3. Short training sessions on how to successfully manage and grow their livelihood projects.
  4. Providing the necessary inputs and resources to launch their livelihood.
  5. Ongoing monitoring to ensure progress and success.
  6. Mentoring to help families overcome obstacles and build long-term sustainability.

Through this initiative, we aim to create a support system that not only provides for the immediate needs of orphans but also empowers their families to become self-sufficient.

We invite you to join us in this vital campaign, advocating for the protection and wellbeing of orphans and their families in Lombok, Aceh, and beyond. Together, we can help create a brighter future where children can thrive in safety, with access to education, healthcare, and the chance to live free from fear and hunger. Let’s work towards a world of peace, justice, and hope for all children.

The Inspire volunteer abroad program at Islamic Relief Canada is a unique opportunity that provides hands-on education to volunteers on the field and at home. Over the past 4 years, we have taken 26 cohorts to 9 different countries to learn from our teams and right-holders on the ground. This program focuses on having volunteers raise donations and awareness while allowing them to serve their communities locally and globally.

Through this experience, IRC volunteers will engage directly with orphan children in Indonesia in order to better understand their circumstances and raise awareness.

Support our volunteers and take part in supporting this noble cause!

The funds raised will go towards Islamic Relief’s projects in Indonesia. This project in Indonesia will empower vulnerable individuals and communities and engage with orphan children. They will also provide increased capacity building ,educational support, and food assistance for socioeconomically disadvantaged and orphan children in Lombok Island.

Over the duration of the field study, we will focus on providing orphans with psychosocial support and educational activities in addition to the distribution of food, clothes, and hygiene items and conduct other community service activities.

Inspire Program

Islamic Relief Canada’s Volunteer Abroad Programs are a unique way to contribute to some of IR Canada’s international projects. Before volunteering abroad, selected volunteers to raise funds that go directly to the project they will be assisting with.

While on the field study, volunteers will be part of a collaborative program where they will take part in several activities, including peer-to-peer learning opportunities, food distributions, beneficiary home visits, and building refurbishment.

This experience allows volunteers to see an existing IR Canada project, contribute to the project through their fundraising efforts, and positively interact with beneficiaries and project staff.

Since 2000, Islamic relief Canada has been supporting vulnerable communities in Indonesia through WASH assistance, livelihood support, and NFI (Non-Food Items) parcels. It has also responded to natural disasters and sponsored hundreds of orphans through the Orphan Sponsorship Program. According to UNICEF, there are an estimated 4.4 Million orphans in Indonesia including over 25,000 children orphaned due to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic.

Islamic Relief works with communities to strengthen their resilience to calamities, and we provide vital emergency aid when disasters occur.

We help the impoverished access basic services, including education, water and sanitation, as well as healthcare. We provide lasting routes out of poverty through our sustainable development schemes. Our integrated approach to progress is transforming communities worldwide.

We tackle the root causes of poverty and make sure that the world’s most vulnerable people have real influence in both our programs and advocacy.

Our key values, of compassion, justice, custodianship, sincerity and excellence – a critical part of our Islamic faith - inspire us each and every day to create positive change and remember the sanctity of life.

In line with Islamic teachings on the value of every human life, we provide assistance to whoever needs it most, regardless of race, religion or gender. We work to transform and save lives of people in crisis both Canada and across the world.

Let us share the khair from the blessings Allah has bestowed upon us.
